Workflows and optimization tips

Step-by-step guides for common advertising scenarios, plus tips to maximize revenue and avoid common pitfalls.

Common Workflows

These step-by-step workflows cover the most common advertising scenarios you'll encounter.

Setting Up a Direct Sponsorship Deal

Use this workflow when you've sold a premium sponsorship package to an advertiser who wants guaranteed presence (e.g., "50% share of voice for Q4").

Step-by-Step

  1. Create a Campaign
Name it after the sponsor and deal (e.g., "Acme Corp - Q4 2024 Sponsorship")
  2. Create a Sponsorship Ad
Set the ad type to "Sponsorship" and configure share of voice percentage
  3. Configure Placements
Enable preroll and/or preamble for sponsor messages
  4. Add Creatives
Upload audio or use the Ad Builder to create sponsor spots
  5. Add Logo (optional)
Upload the sponsor's logo to display in the player throughout playback
  6. Set Flight Dates
Configure start and end dates to match the contract
Sponsor Tip: Create a preamble creative with "This article is brought to you by [Sponsor]" for premium brand integration beyond just preroll ads.

Running a Standard Ad Campaign

Use this workflow for campaigns with specific impression goals (e.g., "Deliver 100,000 impressions over 30 days").

Step-by-Step

  1. Create a Campaign
Name it descriptively (e.g., "TechCorp Product Launch - January 2025")
  2. Create a Standard Ad
Set ad type to "Standard" and enter the impression goal
  3. Set Flight Dates
Define start and end dates—the system will pace delivery across this period
  4. Configure Placements
Select where the ad can run (preroll, midroll, etc.)
  5. Add Multiple Creatives
Upload 2-3 creative variations to prevent listener fatigue
  6. Set Creative Rotation
Use "Evenly" for equal distribution or "Weighted" to favor certain creatives
  7. Add Companion Images
Include banners with click-through URLs for additional engagement
Pacing Note: Standard ads automatically pace to deliver evenly. If you're behind pace, delivery accelerates; if ahead, it slows. Check pacing in your campaign dashboard.

Using Google Ad Manager

Use this workflow to integrate with Google Ad Manager (GAM) for centralized ad trafficking, programmatic demand, or unified reporting across all your ad inventory.

Step-by-Step

  1. Set Up Your GAM Account
Create audio ad units in Google Ad Manager for each placement you want to monetize
  2. Create a Campaign in Everlit
Name it "Google Ad Manager" or based on your ad unit structure
  3. Create a Network Ad
Set ad type to "Network" and select Google Ad Manager as the provider
  4. Enter Ad Unit ID
Copy your ad unit ID from GAM
  5. Configure Placements
Enable the placements that correspond to your GAM ad units
  6. Enable Network Ads in Contexts
Make sure network ads are enabled in your contexts
GAM-Only Setup: If you want GAM to control all ad delivery, simply don't create local sponsorship or standard ads. Network ads will serve on every opportunity.
Priority Note: Everlit sponsorship and standard ads take precedence over network ads when scheduled. This lets you run special local campaigns while still using GAM for general ad delivery.

Creating a Premium, Limited-Ad Context

Use this workflow to create a reduced-ad experience for premium subscribers or VIP users.

Step-by-Step

  1. Create a New Context
Name it "Premium" or "Subscriber Experience"
  2. Configure Allowed Placements
Disable midrolls and postrolls, keep only preroll if any
  3. Set User Pacing
Choose "Reduced" pacing for fewer ads per session
  4. Disable Network Backfill
Turn off "Everlit Ad Network Backfill" to prevent programmatic ads
  5. Set Maximum Ad Length
Optionally limit to 15s ads for a lighter experience
  6. Update Your Embed Code
Pass the context ID when embedding the player for premium users
<div
  id="everlit-auto-audio-widget"
  data-publication-id="YOUR-PUBLICATION-ID"
  data-context-id="YOUR-PREMIUM-CONTEXT-ID"
></div>
No-Ads Option: For a completely ad-free experience, disable all placements and network backfill. Only sponsorship logo placements will remain.

Using Dynamic Ads for Personalization

Use this workflow to create personalized ads that change based on context—like location-specific offers or audience-targeted messaging.

Step-by-Step

  1. Create Your Ad and Campaign
Set up the campaign and ad as you normally would
  2. Open the Ad Builder
Use the interactive builder to create your creative
  3. Add Variables to Your Script
Use {{VARIABLE_NAME}} syntax where you want dynamic content
  4. Configure Default Values
Add comma-separated defaults that will be randomly selected if no override is passed
  5. Generate and Save
The creative is saved as a dynamic ad template
  6. Pass Variables at Runtime
Use query parameters (dynad_variablename) to override defaults

Example: Location-Based Ad

// Script with variables
"Visit {{STORE_NAME}} in {{CITY}} for {{DISCOUNT}} percent off this weekend!"

// Default values
STORE_NAME: "Acme Store"
CITY: "New York, Los Angeles, Chicago" // Randomly selects one
DISCOUNT: "20"

// Override for San Francisco
?dynad_store_name=Acme%20SF&dynad_city=San%20Francisco&dynad_discount=25

Optimization Tips

Maximizing Fill Rate

Enable All Placements

More placement options = more opportunities for ads to serve. Enable preroll, midroll, and postroll where appropriate.

Use Network Ads

Connect to Google Ad Manager for programmatic demand or centralized ad trafficking.

Multiple Creative Lengths

Have 15s, 30s, and 60s creatives available. Different contexts may have different length restrictions.

Avoid Over-Targeting

Don't restrict ads to too few contexts. Broader targeting = higher fill rate.

Maximizing Revenue

Prioritize Direct Sales

Sponsorship and standard ads typically have higher CPMs than network. Sell direct first.

Use Companion Images

Companion banners increase engagement and can command higher rates from advertisers.

Premium Context Upsell

Offer advertisers "exclusive" contexts (mobile-only, premium content) at higher rates.

Track and Report

Use campaign metrics to show advertisers their ROI. Happy advertisers renew.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Why It's a Problem How to Fix
Overlapping Sponsorships Two 50% sponsorships can't both deliver—someone gets under-delivered Ensure sponsorship percentages total 100% or less per placement
No Flight End Date Standard ads without end dates can't pace properly Always set end dates for standard campaigns
Too Many Midrolls Excessive interruptions frustrate listeners and increase abandonment Limit midrolls to longer content; use pacing controls
Ignoring Creative Fatigue The same ad over and over annoys listeners Use multiple creatives with rotation; refresh creative monthly
No Network Ads Configured Missing revenue from inventory without local ads scheduled Connect to GAM or enable Everlit Network to capture all opportunities
Not Testing Creatives Audio issues or timing problems make your ads look bad Always preview creatives before activating campaigns
